[Blog] Photofast CR5400, what to do with old micro SDHC?

What happens when u run out of space on a memory stick but u have some micro SDHC cards laying around.  You get a photofast cr5400, the cr5400 uses 2x micro sdhc and uses JBOD on them to make it a giant memory stick pro duo for your PSP or Sony camcorder.  Photo fast claims faster speeds and that u can use 2 of any card (currently 16GB is all that’s offered for SDHC,) but how dose it do.

I will start with a disclaimer i got this card from ebay so it may be counterfeit, and all parts are different so your results may vary.

Installation went smooth but with a major glitch, the parts that i got (i ordered 2) would not work with my psp with 2×16x, I tired 2×16GB Polaroid by PNY class 2 cards but that wouldn’t work so what I did use was a 16GB PNY class 2 micro SDHC and a Sandisk 8GB class 2 micro SDHC.  The steps for installation are to insert the smallest card in the 1st slot then format in your sony device, then remove and do the same with the larger card, then to take the smaller card and place it in slot 2 and format again, this will give you a usable amount of space equal to both cards together mine totals 22GB (real GB).

Now for the benching, all benches done on a launch psp 1000 with m33 5.00-6 and no memory stick acceleration, all tests also had 3 runs done with the 1st being posted as they all showed vary close results with each configuration.

cr5400 with 1×16GB pny class 2 and 1x 8GB Sandisk class 2

psp 16GB + 8GB photofast cr5400

The results are clear that the cr5400 is slower than a standard pro duo stick and a single card in the device, but u cannot beat the price, the photofast card was about $3 on ebay then a 16GB micro SDHC is about $42 and an 8GB is about $18 so that is a total of  $63 for a photofast setup verse $66 for a 16GB Sandisk pro duo, that said micro SDHC cards do go on sale frequently and large memory sticks do not.  So this solution is clearly not for every one but if you do have some micro SD cards from a camera or cellphone this is worth the money.
