I recently picked up a new decibel meter to play with and help during testing. The mini digital sound level meter measures from 40 dB to 130 dB. It has MIN/MAX measurement ability with hold and auto power-off function to ensure long battery life. It includes 9V battery and removable wind screen with a frequency range: 31.5 Hz to 8 kHz. Let’s see how it actually performs … shall we?

Decibel Tests:
Background Information on decibels:
Actual Tests:
In the tests above, I used the “Max” function on the meter to find the maximum output of each after about 5 minutes of testing each item. I tested a few things I had around my room just to get a feel for how the decibel meter worked. I thought I was going to blow my poor little Choiix Boom Boom speakers playing a few different songs as loud as it would go.
Usage:
Once you hit the power button, you will have three options to play with: Min/Max and decibels at that moment.

The picture (top left) is measuring the decibels at the moment they occur. It fluctuates depending on what kind of noises, or lack thereof, you have around you. The “Max” function (top right) will only record the highest output in decibels it receives. It is nice to see what the peak decibel is with what you have going on while using this function. The “Min” function (bottom) will record the lowest decibel output during testing. All three settings are very self-explanatory and straight forward.
Conclusion:
For the price of the mini sound level meter, it is surprisingly of good quality. It does not feel cheap at all. The LCD screen is bright and easy to read. It is very easy to use. If you need a cheap decibel meter that is less than scientific grade, you should check this one out. I am really happy with it so far!
