[Blog] Cracked screen on HTC Droid Incredible: The Current State

Well looky here! A normal looking smartphone. And it is a pretty one!

But no one really wants to look at the back of the phone… lets flip it over and see that sexy 3.7 inch screen with 480×800 resolution and with the HTC sense UI… oh here we g…..OH MY GOSH?!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT?!?!

Despite the severely cracked screen it functions just like a brand new one would.

I just acquired this HTC Droid Incredible from a friend of mine. For some reason he didn’t want it anymore and replaced it with a brand new phone.

As you can see it still powers on, now can I unlock it?

Oh yay, I can. But can I play angry birds?

Well yes I can!

But even though this phone is still fun to use in its current state… it still would be way better if the cracks didn’t get in the way of text and the blades of glass did not get stuck in my fingers. So I am going to attempt a repair!

It should be pretty easy, I just ordered a replacement screen off of eBay and it should be here any day now. But will the repair be as easy as it looks? Will I get a cool new smartphone without paying for a data plan? Will I just drop it after I fix it and have to start all over again?

Stay tuned.

Now just get a screen protector from xoskins. That will stop your screen from cracking again. They are military grade without the orange peel look of many others.

I had the same problem, ordered the glass and forgot the tape. I bought a new plastic case just the part where the glass attaches and that has the tape already on it. I fixed another one and used a tape product that I found on Cellular direct. They have all kinds of parts and fast shipping.

Yea opened it up a few times, only thing that is cracked is the digitizer. I am actually waiting on some adhesive strips before I do the repair…

i’m assuming you checked to make sure the screen is actually cracked and not just the layer on top of it?
Either way good luck recovering it! I will watch to see what happens.

Shame you didn’t have a screen protector handy, would save you some scars.

Dropped it while at a bar. Apparently he reached for a beer and knocked it off. It only had a snap on case and this phone is almost as notorious as the iPhone 4 for cracking on impact if it drops on a corner.

I hope I can set up a better camcorder for part 2 and record the whole process and speed it up. It is bad timing since my spring semester starts tomorrow, but hopefully I can fit it in between school work.

And yes, at first I thought I would have to solder something but it seems like this repair will be as simple as switching out a mobo on a comp would be. I’ll try to make it a little bit more informative then this blog though ;)
