[Review] Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 – King of the Hill

Test System:

The test system is updated with every video card review to reflect the video card being tested, as well as the driver used in the testing. The other parts of the test system will never change until they are no longer considered top of the line. This way we can insure consistent results that can be compared without hesitation.

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 920
  • Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Extreme
  • RAM: Mushkin Blackline 3×2GB DDR3
  • Video Card: Nvidia GTX 590 (Drivers: 267.71 WHQL)
  • Nvidia Card Drivers: 580/570/560/480 – 266.56, 460/450 – 260.99
  • AMD Card Drivers: 6970/6950 – 10.13, 6850/5870 – 10.10
  • Power Supply: Antec TPQ 1200W
  • Storage: Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB

Overclocking:

We were warned ahead of time to expect only around a 10% gain from overclocking from the GTX 590. Well, it seems that they were almost dead on. We reached a final overclock of about 8% on the GPU core clock speed and about a 2% gain on the memory clock speed. The overclock is not too impressive, but when the GTX 590 is running two of the fastest, most complex cores on the planet, there really is no reason to overclock if it’s just to game. You will have other things to worry about running the GTX 590, which will be covered later on.

3DMark:

Crysis Warhead:

With the relatively small overclock, we were not expecting to see much of a gain in the results in the 3DMark tests and Crysis, and we were right! The 3DMark tests saw an average of about 2% increase in each test, and Crysis saw a gain of about 2.5% increase in average FPS. As we always say, a gain is a gain, but this is certainly nothing to write home about.

“The Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 can take its spot on top of the podium for being the fastest single card solution on the market.”
1. You did not review the 6990, therefore you cannot make this statement.
2. EVERY review I have seen places the 6990 above the 590. Except yours, which places the 590 above the 6990 yet fails to review the latter.

Complete garbage. Either you are intentionally misleading, or you are just terrible at your job.

Somehow, I was expecting team green to bring a real showstopper with the GTX590 (like they usually do), considering the extra time they took bringing it into the fray. Judging by how close many of the races were, and the give/take in performance crown for the varied testing games, it really is just a toss-up. As hard as both AMD and nVidia have been trying, there’s just no hands-down winner in this current generation of GPUs. Guess I’m just not used to there being no clear-cut “victor” in these graphics battles.

Sorry for any disappointment gentlemen, but we were not and have not been provided with a 6990 for review, so we do not have a sample to compare. Again, we apologize, we are not intending to be misleading regarding our performance comparison.
