The Gigabyte X79 UD3 is the most cost efficient of the X79 lineup offered from Gigabyte. Scaling upwards through their UD5 and UD7 brands which are more geared at overclock enthusiasts all the way up to their G1 Assassin 2 version. This week the X79 UD3 goes on the bench to not only measure performance but to get a better understanding of the platform altogether.

The X79 UD3 is a socket 2011 motherboard based on the X79 chipset. The boards main features are quad channel memory, SATA 6 Gbps, Super Speed USB 3.0 and 32x PCI Express 3.0 capability. These are things you will find on all X79 boards from the least to the most expensive versions.

So why go for a mid range board over a more expensive board?

When you purchase a motherboard for a DIY system you are purchasing two things, the name on the box and the features. The lesser of the two, plays a large role in justifying price of a motherboard. While any board can use expansion devices to add features like Bluetooth, improved networking capability or dedicated sound processing equipment having quality features built into a motherboard opens up expansion and USB slots for other duties. Crossfire and SLI both take up a lot of space with double and triple slot coolers being the norm. USB ports can be filled up quite quickly as well with printers, keyboards, mouse, game controllers, phone chargers and coffee mug warmers.

The more important of the two is the name on the box. Buying a quality product from a reputable company is very important. The name on the box carries not only the perception on the capability of devices used in the construction of the product, it also carries with it a companies quality control and customer service history. Customer service has always been a strong point with Gigabyte. Quality control is something Gigabyte takes very seriously as well.
