On Screen Display (OSD) Menu

Accessing the menu for the VG278H is pretty simple. Just press the button found below the lower bezel marked “Menu”. Once you have opened up the menu you are presented with a pretty decent assortment of options.

Splendid

This options opens up the monitor’s preset display options. There are six in total. They are as follows:

  • Scenery – Preferred for viewing photos
  • Standard – Preferred for text, and document viewing
  • Theatre – Preferred for movie viewing
  • Game – Preferred for gaming
  • Night View – Recommended for dark scene movies, and games.
  • sRGB – Preferred for document editing

Color

This option contains most of the standard color adjustment options like temperature, contrast, saturation, and brightness along with three not so standard extras:

  • Smart View – allows for clearer viability after titles screen (elaborate)
  • Skin Tone – allows you to pick from three preset options which include yellow, red, and natural. Natural is chosen by default.

Nvidia Lightboost -  this option allows you to increase, or decrease the brightness of the screen while viewing 3D content. Its not a replacement for the display’s brightness option, but more an add on to it.  If you’re current brightness is set to say 100, Boost will increase it while viewing 3D content by 2x. Hence the name Lightboost. You’ll get the maximum benefit from this option when your brightness is set to 100. Lowering the brightness of the display will decrease the effectiveness of Lightboost.

Image

Contains standard image adjustment options like sharpness, aspect control, position, and focus. There are two more options:

  • Trace Free – allows you to adjust the display’s refresh rate from 0-100
  • ASCR – allows the monitor to smartly adjust contrast. This option is only available in Theatre, Scenery, Game, and Night View.
  • Input Select – Pretty self explanatory. This function allows you to switch between the display inputs HDMI, DVI, and VGA.

System Set Up

Splendid Demo – This function splits the screen in two and allows you to view the differences between the display presets simultaneously. Pretty handy tool in theory, but the mode only allows you to only compare Standard mode against the other preset modes. You cannot compare Night View vs. Theatre, Game vs. Theatre, etc. It is a nice option, but we feel that the option may have been a more  useful if you were able to compare all of the preset modes against each other, and not just have the modes be compared to the default Standard mode.

Volume Adjust – allows you to increase or decrease the volume of the display when using the 3mm audio jack. This only controls the volume of the display when utilizing the 3mm audio jack. This will not effect your system’s master volume control.

3D IR – Now this option comes in real handy if you are into going to LAN parties and like to take your display with you. When enabled this option prevents IR interference to the VGH278 from any other IR emitters that maybe close to the display. Now in all honesty we don’t think you will find too many wireless devices in LAN parties in regards to mice, and keyboards as with serious gamers, wired peripherals are the more preferred choice. As such the chances of encountering possible IR interference is more or less slim. However it is possible that you may have one or two people who do bring those IR wireless peripherals to the party, or bring other 3D displays. So what are we saying? Its a low probability that you will ever need to have this option, but it is nice to know you do have it just in case. Unfortunately with our time with the VG278H we didn’t attend any LAN parties so for now we have to go on faith that the option does work.

ECO – This function enables the power save feature.

OSD Set Up – There are four function available under this option which allow you to tweak the appearance of the on screen display by selecting the level of transparency or opaque you want the menu to show. The option also allows you to adjust when the OSD times out after non-use. The last function is DDC/CI allowing you to enable or disable the function.

Language – allows you to select the preferred language of the monitor (i.e. English, French, Italian, etc.)

Information – Shows the details of the monitor in regards to currently selected input mode, resolution, current Hz, and model of the display.

All Reset – resets all options to default
