ADATA has recently launched three new models of Solid State Drives all using SandForce controllers with the new 0% Over provisioning. The 3 models from bottom to top are the SP800, SP900 and SX900. Over Provisioning is something SandForce started at launch that leverages extra NAND (7% extra) to increase performance and longevity of SF driven SSDs by using extra NAND to provide space for Mapping data and TRIM. Thanks to new code from LSI (the owners of the SandForce controller) Solid State no extra over provisioning is necessary. While the actual method that makes this possible is not disclosed, users can now get SandForce drives in typical Binary file sizes of 32, 64, 128GB or more.
The SP800 drive is a SATA 3GBps interface and only comes in 32 and 64 GB densities. The SP900 that we are reviewing here, ranges from 64 – 256 GB, and uses the SATA 6 Gbps interface. For top of the line, the SX900 is also available, with densities up to 512 GB, it leverages synchronous NAND to improve write speeds even more. All 3 drives come with a 3.5” adapter and a license for Acronis True Image HD.
The SP900 offers users up to 550 MBps read speeds coupled with 520 MBps writes for the 128 GB and an advertised 85K IOPS. With a 1,000,000 hour MTBF the 3 year warranty should expire long before the drive ever does.
