[Review] Giada i35G (ATOM D2500 Based) MiniPC

Introduction

This is the second Giada Mini PC I have had an opportunity to lay my hands on and I must say I am impressed. This unit, sporting the Intel ATOM D2500 dual core, has a solid feel and just enough ports to be useful without affecting its overall comeliness.

The outer packaging is used for both the black and white with a description of the contents on one end. Some of the artwork on the box is embossed which gives a more pricey feel to this unit.

The PC itself is in one package and the accessories in another. This makes this unit more easily repackaged for transport as there is no guessing about how to put it back in the box. That being said, this unit is portable enough to take with you on vacation, set up in your hotel room and get your Netflix, Crackle and Hulu on when you turn in at night.

There is no doubt this is an attractive unit (also available in black) when compared to other devices in its class.
What you do not see on the back or front is kept under the lid. Here we find a Mini Digital Optical SPDIF, headphone out, a USB 2.0 port and a multi card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO – does read SDHC). This unit is outfitted to take care of your home entertainment needs and with the included remote Windows Media Player or Banshee becomes your friend. The remote function card is multi-lingual (English and what I presume to be Chinese). Do use 1.5v AAA batteries as many (all that I tried) rechargeable 1.2v AAA batteries do not seem to allow the remote to function as well.

Size also matters here and small is the word of the day.About the size of a 3-4 disk DVD case the i34G is easily hidden on a book shelf or a desk corner and is in no way an eyesore.

The manual is pretty much open and shut. It opens with a welcome and thanks you for purchasing the device and goes into device details, setup information and trouble shooting section.

Most manufacturers give you a one year warranty (HP, ACER, Lenovo…) on computer systems! Giada stands behind their product for two.

The one potential caveat, for some, is the unit does not include an operating system (OS it is optional). This is not really a big issue, as there are many more options for PCs of this level. Why do I say that? You do not need Windows for office application or media playback. Here it is simply a matter of choice where Giada is concerned. Bringing you a great product at a reasonable price is very important and the fact is more and more small form factor PCs come with Google Chrome OS or Linux. If you want Windows you can get an OEM copy for as low as $89. If you want to use Linux, Chrome Linux or another free OS it will cost you an hour or two plus the time it takes you to download it.

shaun,

Because this system is at the bottom end of the specifications for the InfiniTV 4 USB I would have to say no it would not. This is based on the CPU processor and GFX. The device itself can stream to four devices and playback (probably capture as well) but working with the InfiniTV 4 USB may be an issue.

How would this computer do with a Ceton InfiniTV 4 USB? Would it be able to record 4 shows at once and still play back one without having problems?
