Introduction
We’ve seen most major memory manufacturers releasing new products optimized for the LGA1366 platform. Reaching speeds above 2000MHz at 1.65v is testament to how far things have come since hitting 1250MHz at 2.3v on our DDR2 sticks was reason for enthusiasts to brag. Now with Bloomfield we all know that we cannot simply push more voltages, provide moving air to the modules and hope we end up with a winning kit. That’s simply not the case. There is now a limit of 1.65v wh...

I had a chance to run a kit of G.Skill F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI Memory, Tri-Channel kit for Intel Core I7 CPU’s, through some tests the past few days. Before I go into all the results I want to touch on the market for these kits.
If you do a search on Newegg you come up with 36 listings which range in price from $145.99 to $283.99 with kits in 6-7-6-18 to 9-9-9-27 timings, and 1.5v to 1.65v. So as you can see, this range of memory has a pretty wide selection of kits for what ever you are loo...

Today, we had the extremely well-known Western Digital VelociRaptor series hard drive land on our doorstep. We will be looking at the WD VelociRaptor 300GB GLFS version. There are 3 versions of this drive, BLFS, GLFS, and HLFS. The HLFS and GLFS models are designed to fit into 3.5″ drive bays. However, the BLFS is a compact form of the VelociRaptor, designed to fit 2.5″ mounts. Do not try to install this into a notebook, because it will not fit due to its thickness.

Resident Overclocker Chew* has been busy in his lab again today, and this time he has more than a few treats for us. First up is his review the Kingston Hyper-X KHX2000C8D3T1K3/3GX triple-channel memory kit. He purchased the kit retail from Newegg as an inexpensive set for use in benching, but what he got was more than he had bargained for. While the kit itself proved to be a solid performer, however the real surprise came as he was finishing up his testing.
Chew* decided to make a late ni...

Today we have a new review posted in the forums, again from our illustrious overclocker, Chew*. He has put a new kit from G.Skill to the test on the AMD AM3 platform and his results were especially interesting. The kit in question was the G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO, which as the part number implies is part of G.Skill’s new ECO line of memory geared towards ultra low voltage for added longevity and power savings. Chew* mentions in his review that the kit proved to be tricky at first ...

Chew* is back at it with a new review of some AMD Black Edition optimized memory from OCZ Technology. This memory comes in two varieties, CAS7 and also CAS8, and is rated for 1600MHz @ 1.65v. What differentiates these kits from other kits with the same speeds and timings are that they come packed pre-loaded with special SPD profiles, only for AMD Phenom II Black Edition processors! What this enables the user to do is load up their AMD OverDrive utility, load the Black Edition memory profil...

It really helps to know when it is time to give it up and with one of these little toys it is a little easier.
A piece of hardware with a purpose from Budget Gadgets. The USB PCI PC Analyzer Diagnoses Card Tester seems to be just the thing to use before scrapping anything, or should I say save headaches before scrapping.
I have tested this on many assumed dead boards and it worked well as it let me know I was correct and they were dead with a 00 code (int 19 error). You would think that I coul...

The Piecemeal Upgrade pt4
Data Protection: Redundancy, backups, offline and online storage.
With limited funds in a single PC household it is important to have a PC that is never down for too long. One of the key problems associated with piecemeal upgrades however is the need to occasionally reinstall the operating system. This can be a nightmare trying to back up documents, photos, settings, applications as well as operating system tweaks one may prefer. Learning how to properly maintain y...

Hello again!

Phenom II x2 550BE , True Black, Radeon HD3850 512mb, Asus M4A78T-E.
Let’s start with PSU, bought it for 52 euros, not bad deal because it was Thermaltake ToughPower 750 watt. Few notes thought, it missed few modular cables… not big deal for me. So i started to put back tog...

Hey my first day here!
Well i dunno where to start, eh?
Uhmm yes, i got few days ago new memorys for my AMD AM3 platform… choice were easy, just pick up cheap and fast memory.
I ended up on G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-2000 F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH kit, price tag of 125 euros. I though now i can start oc*ing my setup, but oh boy how wrong i was. As the kit fly’s on intel chipsets, it wont fly on AMD chipset. Im barely getting some decent numbers: CL7 and 1600mhz and stock voltage. Well that isn...

So after an hour long battle with the image uploader, I think I can declare victory.
Relation between memory timings and frequency
You may have wondered which kit of RAM is better, the DDR 1066MHz at 5-5-5-15 or DDR 2133MHZ at 10-10-10-30. Some people will say the DDR 1066MHz at 5-5-5-15 is better because of the tighter timings others will say the DDR 2133MHz at 10-10-10-30 is better because of the higher frequency. The answer is the actual latency is exactly the same and the DDR 2133MHz at...

Piece Meal Upgrades pt 3
As already discussed, a piece meal upgrade is performed when a jump to an entirely new platform is not financially possible. A ground up all new part design is best and will give the best price performance ratio if properly setup. For those that cannot afford a complete rebuild though, designing a system with affordable parts that also support upgrading over an extended period of time is the only option. While more money will be spent over the life of the upgrade, re...
