Introduction
During a Private Cloud event in Durham, NC (Thanks Yung Chou and John Baker) I was amazed to discover the information available on Cloud computing. For many years we have been using the client\server model and this is just the next step; sort of. This is not some brand new technology but it is a step in the right direction that leverages newer hardware features (No VT-d yet) of desktop processors.
As some of you know I am a very practical person (when it comes to computers) who is...

Rosewill’s BLACKHAWK is one of their newest introductions into the chassis market. They have pre-installed four 120mm and one 140mm fans for almost maximum cooling. Right out of the box, it will save users from spending extra money on missing fans. They have also incorporated the traditional I/O ports most users look for in today’s market, as well as a top-mounted HDD dock. With long VGA card and water cooling support, integrated cable management, CPU back plate cutout, and easy-clean ...

I have been going down the long path of investigating 10′ control options and there were three that sounded like they could be the best out there – so we bought them all and have been putting them through their paces. Ultimately, I like each of them, each performs exceptionally, and I would reccomend them all. 10′ control for the PC was pretty stale until the iPod touch basically took over, but these dedicated devices are a step forward and as long as your eyesight is good make...

Phenom II X6 DICE Run – Part 1: Board + Pot Prep8 Comments By SlappacloseAuthor: SlappaName: Matthew Sembinelli Email: matthew.sembinelli@gmail.com Site:http://slappablog.wordpress.com About: Hardware Enthusiast, and OverclockerSee Authors Posts (17) on July 21, 2010
Hey guys, prepping for a DICE run tomorrow on my Phenom II X6 1090T
Thought you guys would appreciate some pics
Went to the store today and bought the following:
Dielectric grease to coat the board to prevent condensation from getting at the electronics of this very precious motherboard.
I couldn’t get any moldable eraser, so I though this would do. It said on the package that it was non-drying, non-cracking, and prevented seepage from water. It provides just the perfect seal to preven...

Hey guys. I did some more tuning, got more results. So I am throwing together my second slushbox blog. To see the first one, click here.
I tried to place my rad in the cooler this time so that the ice covered more surface area. This resulted in idle temps of 0-1C. So i pushed my Phenom II X6 1090T even further. Here goes my second set of results.
4.806GHz All 6 Cores @ 1.648Vcore 1C idle – Validation
It took me an hour to get this validation. I could only previously validate 4.73GHz. ...
[Guide] Converting your VHS collection to digital and a little more!0 Comments By ArchercloseAuthor: ArcherName: Kevin Marlin Email: kevinsmarlin@embarqmail.com Site:http://www.techreaction.net About:See Authors Posts (18) on May 26, 2010
A lot of people have an old VHS collection gathering dust, or content that was purchased on their gaming device that must be kept on that device. What does it really take to get this content on to a DVD? Not much.
Using a hardware video trans-coder, such as the ADS DVD-ExpressDX2 (does not work with Vista or later without software issues), a DVD+/-RW Drive and an external HDD for portability, converting a video collection as fast as you can play them (even direct to DivX) is pretty simple.
So wh...

X86 has one more chance in the race toward the living room and it starts now. Behold, the only platform with the roadmap to bring the vision of virtual reality into the present. Or transform the television into an entertainment platform. The upcoming AMD Phenom II X6 processor and its progeny may well find its way into your living room - through an inevitable cascade in living room applications. Encoding old VHS/Beta Tapes and LP’s3 Comments By BuckeyecloseAuthor: BuckeyeName: Bill Harmon Email: wharmon@comcast.net Site: About:See Authors Posts (10) on February 26, 2010
A few years ago a friend of mine approached me with a huge project, he had something like 200+ VHS and Beta tapes of old football games that he collects and wanted them encoded onto DVD’s. He also had a few computer parts that we assembled to create a Capture/Encoding work station with and then the fun began.
To capture the old tapes we used a Canopus ADVC-1394 capture card which is some what of an older card but still worked very well for what we wanted to do. One of the quirks this card ...

Let me start by saying that I have never done a hardware review. So I may ramble a bit.
The box that it came in is on the plain side. Not many accessories are included. When I first held the board in my hands I was like “That is a sexy mobo.” The gray and black color scheme looks very good. The componet layout seems very good also. For the purpose that I bought it it seemed a perfect choice. In seeing that I am useing it as a cruncher it has everything that I need.
The onboard hea...
Old Machines, junk it or repair it2 Comments By BuckeyecloseAuthor: BuckeyeName: Bill Harmon Email: wharmon@comcast.net Site: About:See Authors Posts (10) on February 5, 2010
Many of us computer geeks have friends and family who turn to us time and time again with problems with there computers, we either fix the problem or scrap the machine.
We also run into older pieces of equipment that for what ever reason we decided it might have some use and take it back home to see what we can do with it.
A few months back a friend of mine was having issues with his wife’s old laptop, it would shut down on its own from time to time. The laptop in question is a eMachine M5...
ZombieTek – LCD Display3 Comments By BuckeyecloseAuthor: BuckeyeName: Bill Harmon Email: wharmon@comcast.net Site: About:See Authors Posts (10) on December 26, 2009
Last year I began working on a project with a couple of friends that was based on a 4” LCD Display powered by a SLCD6 controller.
After seeing these units at Reachtech.com who manufactures these units in all different sizes and specifications I thought to myself that one of these units would be a great MOD to show computer data on the front of my TJ07 that I had just built. With the help from my friend Jeff I managed to get a unit from Steve over at Reachtech, both of whom are great guys and f...

I remember the first time I got my very own PC, it was a gift from my sister about 5 years ago, an Intel P4 2.8Ghz northwood cpu. I canvassed for the other parts, paid ~$5 to have it assembled, and have been using the old clunker since.
Fast forward to the holidays of 2009, with so many applications that I install and use these days, the old clunker just can no longer cope. So as a gift to myself this Chrismas, I bought an i7 860, a Gigabyte motherboard, team xtreem memory and a budget A...
PCI POST Code Reader: Is it dead or can I revive it?4 Comments By ArchercloseAuthor: ArcherName: Kevin Marlin Email: kevinsmarlin@embarqmail.com Site:http://www.techreaction.net About:See Authors Posts (18) on December 23, 2009
It really helps to know when it is time to give it up and with one of these little toys it is a little easier.
A piece of hardware with a purpose from Budget Gadgets. The USB PCI PC Analyzer Diagnoses Card Tester seems to be just the thing to use before scrapping anything, or should I say save headaches before scrapping.
I have tested this on many assumed dead boards and it worked well as it let me know I was correct and they were dead with a 00 code (int 19 error). You would think that I coul...
A good clamp-on multimeter for GP use1 Comment By ArchercloseAuthor: ArcherName: Kevin Marlin Email: kevinsmarlin@embarqmail.com Site:http://www.techreaction.net About:See Authors Posts (18) on December 21, 2009
Well I had a chance to do some testing for BudgetGadgets.Com and ran across what I thought was a deal (it seems to be). The DT-3266L clamp on multimeter, at less than $14 USD, is an excellent around the house meter with decent capabilities. Just a little tip before diving into the DATA, keep the probes clean! Use alcohol or acetone pads, scotch brite pads, copper or steel wool will promote better/proper functionality epically where resistance measurements are concerned. I am not going to talk it...
