A few years ago a friend of mine approached me with a huge project, he had something like 200+ VHS and Beta tapes of old football games that he collects and wanted them encoded onto DVD’s. He also had a few computer parts that we assembled to create a Capture/Encoding work station with and then the fun began.
To capture the old tapes we used a Canopus ADVC-1394 capture card which is some what of an older card but still worked very well for what we wanted to do. One of the quirks this card ...

Let me start by saying that I have never done a hardware review. So I may ramble a bit.
The box that it came in is on the plain side. Not many accessories are included. When I first held the board in my hands I was like “That is a sexy mobo.” The gray and black color scheme looks very good. The componet layout seems very good also. For the purpose that I bought it it seemed a perfect choice. In seeing that I am useing it as a cruncher it has everything that I need.
The onboard hea...

Many of us computer geeks have friends and family who turn to us time and time again with problems with there computers, we either fix the problem or scrap the machine.
We also run into older pieces of equipment that for what ever reason we decided it might have some use and take it back home to see what we can do with it.
A few months back a friend of mine was having issues with his wife’s old laptop, it would shut down on its own from time to time. The laptop in question is a eMachine M5...

Last year I began working on a project with a couple of friends that was based on a 4” LCD Display powered by a SLCD6 controller.
After seeing these units at Reachtech.com who manufactures these units in all different sizes and specifications I thought to myself that one of these units would be a great MOD to show computer data on the front of my TJ07 that I had just built. With the help from my friend Jeff I managed to get a unit from Steve over at Reachtech, both of whom are great guys and f...

I remember the first time I got my very own PC, it was a gift from my sister about 5 years ago, an Intel P4 2.8Ghz northwood cpu. I canvassed for the other parts, paid ~$5 to have it assembled, and have been using the old clunker since.
Fast forward to the holidays of 2009, with so many applications that I install and use these days, the old clunker just can no longer cope. So as a gift to myself this Chrismas, I bought an i7 860, a Gigabyte motherboard, team xtreem memory and a budget A...

It really helps to know when it is time to give it up and with one of these little toys it is a little easier.
A piece of hardware with a purpose from Budget Gadgets. The USB PCI PC Analyzer Diagnoses Card Tester seems to be just the thing to use before scrapping anything, or should I say save headaches before scrapping.
I have tested this on many assumed dead boards and it worked well as it let me know I was correct and they were dead with a 00 code (int 19 error). You would think that I coul...

Well I had a chance to do some testing for BudgetGadgets.Com and ran across what I thought was a deal (it seems to be). The DT-3266L clamp on multimeter, at less than $14 USD, is an excellent around the house meter with decent capabilities. Just a little tip before diving into the DATA, keep the probes clean! Use alcohol or acetone pads, scotch brite pads, copper or steel wool will promote better/proper functionality epically where resistance measurements are concerned. I am not going to talk it...

Phenom II x2 550BE , True Black, Radeon HD3850 512mb, Asus M4A78T-E.
Let’s start with PSU, bought it for 52 euros, not bad deal because it was Thermaltake ToughPower 750 watt. Few notes thought, it missed few modular cables… not big deal for me. So i started to put back tog...

The popular web tracker Mininova has recently been ruled by the Dutch court to remove all its illeagal content, like many other popular torrent sites in recent years. They tried to retain the torrents that were not copyrighted, but no matter much they tried, they could not remove 100% of the illeagal torrents. They will still however will allow users to upload their own content for distribution. Following the removal of these illeagal contents, the number of hits to the website has dropped dra...

Introduction
When LanCool appeared, I had doubts bout the chassis it produced. It simply wasn’t worth its price when there were a whole lot of SECC/Hybrid chassis out there at more pleasing prices…my own personal opinion.
However my perception of LanCool changed when they launched their Dragonlord series of chassis.

LanCool Dragonlord
The models K56, K58, K60, K62 all have similar features, with the K62 having the most and the K56/58 having t...

Looking back in time we see that Phenom II has been on a saga. If you cannot wait you can watch it now, or you can read the story and then revel that it was digitally transcribed for all time.
At Quakecon 2009 on Saturday #1 rated overclocker K|ngp|n and our own Sami Makinen reached a record 7.088 GHz by overclocking AMD Phenom II on Dragon technology. Also, in front of a live audience we achieved the #3 3DMark06 record and ran the benchmark at a quad-core record of 6.6GHz.

There seems to be some misunderstanding about what Hyper-Transport (HT-AMD), Quick Path Interconnect (QPI-Intel) and Front Side Bus (FSB-Intel and pre-A64 AMD) really are and their differences.
First we need to clear the air: Socket 775 is dying (FSB is DEAD)! The FSB can no longer adequately support the information flow. In the diagram below and with the data provided the problem is obvious, too much data for the old bus.
As can be seen all information must take one path on the older architectu...

I’m planning to reinstall OS of my web server, nick named Devourer. Why suchs a name? Well simple i’ve had that rig for about 1 months and it has already broken 3HDDs! Hopefully this one last little longer, ok just unlucky with this. Oh what comes to it’s current specs: Apple G4 Gigabit Motherboard, G4 Dual 450MHz cpu (well that’s only oringinal what’s left of it), 1GB of SDRam, GF4TI4600 with mod bios, 60GB Samsung Spinpoint and modded ATX power supply.

Over my time spent as a semi-enthusiast of computer hardware, I found that there was a certain disparity between customer experience and ‘professional’ reviews. Reviews are nice in that they allow you to get a feel of how products perform – they let you know what to expect when you buy a product.
However, what I found is that when I buy something based on reviews, there are always things that make themselves known upon extended use of the product that do not always reveal thems...
