For years Microsoft endured Apple's abuse (http://www.dailytech.com/Bill+Gates+Speaks+on+Windows+Criticizes+Mac+Ads/article5957.htm), as its competitor aired scores of commercials, slowly convincing computer (http://www.dailytech.com/New+Microsoft+Commercial+Apple+Users+Paying+for+Br and+Not+Product/article14764.htm#) users that Windows was an error-prone, virus-burdened, inefficient, impotent OS. Now Microsoft has fired back with the culmination of its $300M USD advertising counterattack -- a series of pointed commercials developed by Crispin Porter + Boguksy.

In the first commercial (http://www.dailytech.com/New+Microsoft+Ad+Hi+Mac+Im+a+PC+and+Im+Cheaper+Tha n+You/article14691.htm), a “Laptop Hunter” named Lauren looked at Mac computers (http://www.dailytech.com/New+Microsoft+Commercial+Apple+Users+Paying+for+Br and+Not+Product/article14764.htm#) only to find them overpriced. Commenting that she "wasn't cool enough" for a Mac, she ended up buying an HP notebook instead.

Now a second commercial has come out and is looking to continue the attack on Apple. In the new commercial, a young engineer and recent college graduate named Giampaolo goes hunting for a laptop when offered $1,500 by Microsoft's secret ad agents. Giampaolo goes to a number of shops, including an Apple store.

While impressed with the Apple MacBook Air’s looks, which he calls "so sexy", it’s what he finds inside that is ugly. Giampaolo, who labels himself as "tech-savvy", instead chooses the HP HDX 16 -- a PC with an Intel (http://www.dailytech.com/New+Microsoft+Commercial+Apple+Users+Paying+for+Br and+Not+Product/article14764.htm#) 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB drive, which he finds at his local Fry's Electronics. He gets the computer for $1,099. A comparable machine with a smaller 15" screen (albeit with "Millions of Colors"), would have cost $2,499 at the Apple store.

Pocketing over $300 after taxes, he comments, "Macs, to me, are more about the aesthetics than they are the computing (http://www.dailytech.com/New+Microsoft+Commercial+Apple+Users+Paying+for+Br and+Not+Product/article14764.htm#) power. I don't wanna pay for the brand, I wanna pay for the computer."

Giampaolo ends up taking home the computer and a little extra money. Of his purchase he says, "You can't beat that."

This is actually really interesting to me and I think a great marketing approach from MS who has continually been bashed by Apple for everything. While the bashing may have been warranted toward MS, Apple certainly has it's fair share of questionable practices and products.

Personally, I love the Mac OS and I love the sleek design of a Mac, but I don't own one. The reason that I don't own one is the same reason why I don't own a 60" plasma TV or drive around in an Escalade. I simply can't afford it for what it is.

I'd love to hear comments from you guys about this.

What I view with Apple and Microsoft Computers is..

Apple: These systems are not like the computer world. Its close to impossible to get infected with virus's , and they are specificaly built to match all the hardware to co-operate with each other. Ideal, Apple are for people that are not enthusiastic to play around with hardware and software, and just wants something to work on.

I love the design of the apple, I aint gonna lie, and I dont personally own a Apple cause I just simply dont like Mac. I always tell people, if you do not want headaches with Microsoft and Windows, and just wants something to work on, then Apple is the best... But they overkill the prices to much...

Windows: Has problems, will always have issues... But they are adaptable... Able to change around the hardware and improve the system for preformance or better hardware... And computer hardware is getting cheaper everyday..

I would prolly be more inclined to buy one if i could build it, tweak it, supe it up or all of the above. I don't like buying pre-built computers. Apple does have eye appeal though.

This sums it up...
Macs are just like pc's except with a simpler OS. Windows pc's are the same as mac's just that their OS is a lot more complex to some.
I know quite a few Mac users that say how much better it is than Windows, but when I tell them I can run OS X on my computer they disagree or complain that it isn't a "True Mac".
It's annoying...

Simpler OS? Not directly, OS X offers every complexity you would want in Linux, and more. Apple just hides it with a UI that is actually complete, unlike Gnome or KDE. (As the UI is part of a finished product, not a open software)

Running a hackintosh most definitely isn't quite the same experience as a full mac ;)

I think a more accurate image of that comic would be 2 identical cars, with the Mac car having a cover over the engine with screws on all 4 corners, indicating the ability to open up the OS and play with the guts if you really want to.

Hardware is the same on the inside, the outside is a cleaner, well thoughtout design/appearance, and the OS is a unique experience- keep in mind they are not directly targetted at enthusiasts that want to sit and spend hours overclocking anyways. The laptops and such are directed at home users that are tired of loading spyware, anti-virus's and general windows issues, that want a change.

Just because mac's aren't "targetted" at you doesn't mean they're evil.

You don't buy a School bus to drive to work every day :p

The biggest difference is how the companies behave/think design wise.

Microsoft keeps backwards compatibility, your old printer from 1997 will probably work on your windows XP after a lot of driver fanangling, Apple assumes you trashed that printer, and upgraded to something with color ink. Apple's customers did- I don't want a parallel port on my macbook pro anyways.

Really the difference in ideologies in a nut shell. But when you think of it, that's how MS had to be to serve their market. Apple essentially exited the mass market 10 years ago, and since then it's been Microsoft's job to try and cater to everyone on the planet with one product. Not really an easy task from anyone's point of view.

All I know is that I can build a workstation that kicks the pants off of apple's highend system and still make it look better than the crapple for less money

Pretty much echo's my thoughts, and I also thought the attacks on MS were a little over the top and almost propaganda in some instances in terms of how untrue or overly zealous some of it was...

They mine as well of been saying
"VISTA HAS VIRUS'S INSTALLED WITH IT"

At some points.

that pic is a terrible example its more like windows in any car and a mac is one of those rice rockets but with no engine in it, all a mac is, is a shinny computer with a free os that u are paying $500 to be able to use and they throw in a glowing apple logo. and if companies like dell and HP wernt so adament about making the cheapest computers that they can and not giving people basic parts like a gpu and using PSUs that dont meet the minimum, there wouldent be thies anti windows and windows crash BS.

and when people say that macs dont crash just wait to loose power and get the ctr+clover no boot screen and have to reinstall with the disks or recovery partion that u dont get with the computer and loose all of your data. or when the POS 8600 that they have been using dies and u dont know it and they dont tell u that u are running on the IGP on your mac book and instead of an RMA they tell u that its outdated and thats why its slow.

and last, without a huge marketing camaighn there would be no macs the company is evil becouse it takes a product that some1 already made then make a buch of pattents that are abusive and lock it up in court (or threaten to) if people try to properly market their products like what happened with the ipod. or how they were legaly obliged to have a 3rd party program be able to flash and have store with the ipod thats cross itunes compatable so music match buys it, then apple goes and says in the add campeighn itunes only for ipods and running MM out of biz so apple could buy the liscense to the ipod back and loop hole thier way out cross liscensing. or telling intel that they will switch to amd unless they get 90% of the 45nm xeos. they are just a horrable company that realise on cult like devotion gained through marketing.
