So, according to AMD, they don't want the 4890 to compete against the GTX275 (despite the fact that it does quite well). Hmmm...strange thinking.

LoL That's is quite funny that performance wise does compete well with the 275 O.o , I wonder what wonder GFX card will "compete" with the 275? DUn DUn DUn!

For the price of it I would save money and get the 4890 OVER the gtx285. The OC potential and performance of the 4890 is awesome. The 4870 1gb has been the competition against gtx 260 and sometimes 280 for a while now anyways. At least AMD isn't lying and saying the 4890 beats the gtx295 by over 9000 fps.

Well that is fantastic news actually. If there goal is to contend with a 260, then the price might be much lower than expected :) ~$200

Hmmm I guess thats cool cuz prices are gonna go down, but why would AMD say this.... it doesnt make sense reallly

Maybe so when you buy a 4890 you are like "zomg... it's so much better then advertised. I will buy AMD forever!"

That is odd. The Geforce GTX 275 & Radeon 4890 are pretty similar in price - the cheapest GTX 275 on Newegg is $260; the cheapest 4890 is $250 with a $20 MIR. It would be awesome if the 4890 drops down to the price of a GTX 260 though - the cheapest of which is $180.

I figure AMD is aiming low just to eat away nV's midrange/performance marketshare as they simply cannot drop GTX260 any lower without loosing $$ for each sold card meaning they are forced to price GTX275 lower to compensate and as such their margins will be trashed across the board.

this is wierd. i guess amd is trying to say that for the same amount of money, you'll get an ati card that is like 20% faster than an nvidia card.
now if they drop the prices down to a 260 216, 4870 4850 and 4830 prices will drop too. and i might just be able to get a 4870 in no time :D

That'll be awesome for us, the consumers.

Because via marketing this card stomps the 260, the 4890 is a bit more expensive so it justifies the cost and seems like a big win for the consumer.
Where as most of the time this card doesn't beat the GTX 275 so there ya go. Wouldn't you rather push a card thats at a good price point and beats its "declared" competition.
