Intel (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20090419232732_Intel_to_Release_Six_Core_Chips_for _Desktops_in_a_Year.html#) to Release Six-Core Chips for Desktops in a Year.
Intel Gulftown Rumoured to Arrive in Q2 2010

Intel Corp. is projected to release its first six-core microprocessors for desktops in the second quarter of 2010, nearly two years after the company began shipments of six-core chips for high-end x86 servers (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20090419232732_Intel_to_Release_Six_Core_Chips_for _Desktops_in_a_Year.html#).

Intel Gulftown processors – which will be drop-in compatible with LGA1366 infrastructure – will have six physical cores with Hyper-Threading technology enabled, thus, capable of processing up to twelve threads at the same time. According to a news-story by HKEPC (http://www.hkepc.com/2754) web-site, which cites mainboard makers, the code-named Gulftown processors made using 32nm process technology, will be launched in Q2 2010, a year from now.

The Gulftown chip belongs to Westmere family of microprocessors that have some micro-architectural advantages over currently available Core i7 processors (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20090419232732_Intel_to_Release_Six_Core_Chips_for _Desktops_in_a_Year.html#) that belong to Nehalem family. Gulftown will significantly boost performance of the microprocessors while staying in the same thermal envelope of 130W.

Intel did not comment on the news-story.

Now that is sweet I just wish Intel would bring the high end down a little closer to earth. Well it aint really that bad the 3&486 models sold way up there (i want to say around 1000) initially so in adjusted dollars they are kind of reasonable NOT

Boggles my mind why they keep releasing more cores but on 775s pumping out crappy Quads with 4mb of cache. I'm still haven't found that theres even enough software out there to take advantage of 4 let alone 6. Seems like Intel is pumping out a bazillion chips right now. Somewhat odd strategy.

Seems like Intel is pumping out a bazillion chips right now. Somewhat odd strategy.Presumably they're also managing to sell all those CPUs, and that suggests that it's a good strategy. They've managed to cover pretty much the entire market, leaving no niche for AMD to take over (although Phenom II seems to be doing a fine job against the Core 2 CPUs).

I assume that 6-core CPUs will do the same that quad-cores did. They'll start off horribly expensive, and after a while Intel will drop the price down to equal the high-end quad-cores. At that point, enthusiasts will start to buy them. In a few more years we'll see really cheap 6-core CPUs, in the same market that the Q8200 covers now.

this is gonna make a 965 look cheap

well I heard they've only sold a million i7's..... thats not a lot. I think intel is just moving along but dont expect to see a S6600 that is a q6600 priced chip.

Well they have gone from Q8200-Q8300-Q8400 (I think is the new one). Yet they are still selling Q6600s so what does that tell ya? The Q6600 is the processor with the most consistent price for the longest time I think I've ever seen it's even gone up. Where as you can find Q8200 for under $100.

By then they should have filtered down to the mainstream market.

The smaller process should make it cheaper to manufacture, and it means that they can stop making any Conroe cores (no other CPUs need those cores any more).

I cringe to think what these will cost the consumer.

I've noticed this too. The price really hasn't gone down much since I purchased mine a while ago... it actually went up some right after the i7 was released.

And the best part is these chips almost never die, 1.5+v's 24/7 :D

I wonder if they'll ever release that 80 core CPU they demonstrated last year.
