Sandy Bridge Part 2 testing....what do you want?

So, I'd like some community feedback on my plans for the 2nd part of my article.

My thoughts so far go like this. I want to test "real world" performance of Sandy Bridge vs Bloomfield, but I don't want to spend the better part of my life for the next month doing so. So, I'm planning to limit my testing to only a small set of the toughest benchmarks around (maybe 6 tests max).

I'm thinking of testing two clock speeds for each platform, 4GHz & 4.5GHz for Bloomfield, plus 4.5GHz & 5GHz for Sandy Bridge. I'll be testing each speed with 1, 2 and 3-way GTX 570 graphics cards.

That'll represent an "easy overclock" on each platform, and a "best case scenario" on each, and therefore it'll include a clock for clock comparison (@4.5GHz)

I'm thinking 3DMark Vantage Extreme, 3DMark11 Extreme, Unigine Heaven DX11 Extreme, Crysis Warhead maxed, Metro 2033 maxed, Mafia II maxed......Do I need to include more benchmarks, or would this give a good enough representation?

I would like to see some timed encodes and transcodes as well as some fold and crunch benches with the Bloom for comparison.
People that buy OEM systems think Linux was a Charlie Brown character, a registry is something you see at target to buy shower gifts, RAM is a Dodge truck and a hard drive is DC at rush hour.

I'd like to focus primarily on gaming performance, but I'll keep it in mind

I would like to see Lost Planet 2 in there if possible ...

Also, is it possible for some speed tests between applications to see if there will be a notice difference in the "snapiness" between the two?

I agree with icebob, 3D01 please! Especially after you hinted at it's possible 01 performance. Compare with an E8xxx and disable cores on the SB to 2 if possible. Clock for clock with E8xxx in 01 and max clocks with both in 01

i would also like to see some encoding benches, like h.264, etc
also some 7-zip, winzip, fritz chess bench, cinebench, pcmark, passmark, linx and folding@home smp

mem benches would be interesting too like maxxmem. SB has very low latencies. how low and exactly how much difference it makes in real world would be nice to see.
    everest, sandra sisoft, etc

edit: most of the game benches and 3dmark will rather show the performance of the vid cards then the cpu difference, clock for clock

Understandable but being that game tests are dependent on the GPU there may not be much of a gain EDIT: that will be noticed.

Well, if that's the case, then I say HT vs no HT and GTX570s in 2x/3x SLI (with different CPUs too).

That reminds me ... I am curious how the NF200 effects tri sli vs sli. Since, in all my reading, I think I remember them saying SB handles the first 2 cards then NF200 picks up if you go tri...

Yeah, P55 and P67 both have 16 lanes, so that's up to x8/x8 Xfire/SLI on those chipsets without any lanes to spare. Any better configuration will need a NF200.

I would like Starcraft 2 benchmarks in high res. compared to the low res. test on Anand. Would be very cool if you could test it against i7 920/950 stock and OC'ed just as you plan on doing.

Another thing that would be very cool is to test a budget motherboard against high end board and see how much you gain OC-wise by paying a premium. Also if you could test how far the stock cooler is from a very high end heat sink when it comes to how far you can push the chip.

I'm planning a mid vs high end motherboard in a seperate review

    Nice!

What about Starcraft 2? I may be able to help you borrowing an account if you don't have the game yourself.
