Interesting and timely discussion. I have seen the ASUS "PC in a tablet" device and like it. It seems to be what I, as a traveling business person would need.

My daughter will be graduating Penn State in the Spring and has accepted a marketing position with Dell in Austin/Round Rock Texas.

Dell is ominously not competing in the tablet market--only offering your garden variety tablet type devices and netbooks.

The billion dollar question is "what do people want?"

Apple has dominated this market by offering simple and reliable devices that do enough to keep people satisfied. The "APP" concept--getting them through their store has been genius IMO. Almost complete control, save for Jailbreaking, is in their hands.

From my own experience as a consumer most of these devices seem to be entertainment and social network devices. This is nice, but most lack the business app and office sync ability which is what I need.

My ideal tablet would be a device that combines, business, entertainment, and communications (wifi, 4g, phone & video) abilities.

My daughter says that she doesn't think a tablet would be a good substitute for a cell phone. I think it can if it had a bluetooth controller (e.g. earpiece or handheld remote) that functioned when the tablet was in the briefcase. 3D glasses for remote video viewing would be killer.

There's gotta be a solution for the "I don't want to be lugging around my tablet all the time" dilemma, such as a paired peripheral with cell phone type functionality.

For what they charge for an iPad, there's a lot of room for competition that can provide productivity along with all the toys.

True.. There are some Bluetooth keyboards that are off brand that are alot cheaper. Just take your tablet in and insist that they test it to make sure it connects..

I won the ASUS Transformer (original, not Prime) from Droid-Life.com back in November, and I'm really enjoying it.

It's getting ICS too, so that should be sweet.
