Default C3 965BE for the TWKR in all of us

The last time I did a major review, it was entitled "955 Unleashed".

This time I would like to introduce AMD's latest flagship processor, the C3 Revision 965 BE.

I made a few changes to the review method. Last time if you recall, I worked strictly in Windows XP, but this time I ran a multitude of benches in both XP and Vista.

I would like to take this time to thank AMD for giving me the oppurtunity once again to review and sample one of their latest and greatest CPU's.

Special thanks also goes out to EnJoY and MSIMAX for taking time out of their schedules to come and bench with me.

That said let me cut the chit chat short and get to the results.

AIR bench configuration
AMD phenom II 965BE C3 ( review sample )
Gigabyte 790 FXT-UD5P
Corsair dominator GT 1866 7-8-7
PC power & cooling 860 + 1200W
Air heatsinks used Xigamtek 1284, True 120, megahalems
2x 4870x2 for 3d, some 2d with a 2600 pro

First I set a baseline on an XP install that was due for a reformat. I used prime 95 with an extremely low flow fan and documented temps for those interested.

Now with a fresh install, I began baby stepping it up with a more aggressive fan setup.

Arrived at this for a final.

Next I tackled benching stability.

Time for some 3d. I benched vantage at the same speed as well, but I appear to have lost the screenshot.

Next I tested the IMC to see how far it could go.

After that, I introduced a higher NB into the picture to find the combined limits.

Then I threw in a high cpu clock and put it all together.

A little bit of 1m.

I did not bother with cpu-z validations for all cooling classes this time around.

Instead I opted for trying to clock all cores up while maintaining a high NB.

Now it's time for some extreme water testing...

I am not going to narrate much for the remainder unless necessary as I beleive I screwed up a couple shots somewhere in this review.

None the less, I feel the results are fairly self explanatory.

Water bench configuration
AMD phenom II 965BE C3 ( review sample )
Gigabyte 790 FXT-UD5P
Corsair dominator GT 1866 7-8-7
PC power & cooling 860 + 1200W
Custom water cooling with DTEK fusion block
2x 4870x2 for 3d, some 2d with a 2600 pro

Something was bugged with this pifast run and only a reboot would fix it.

Unbugged pifast ran at same settings.

I pushed a little harder but wprime 1024 would not pass.

3d this time with vantage.

That wraps up eXtreme water testing. Time for the sub zero results.

Phase change bench configuration
AMD phenom II 965BE C3 ( review sample )
Gigabyte 790 FXT-UD5P
Corsair dominator GT 1866 7-8-7
PC power & cooling 860 + 1200W
Unmodded Mach 1 single stage ( should have been retired many many years ago )
2x 4870x2 for 3d, some 2d with a 2600 pro

No wprime 1024 at this speed as this ancient mach 1 just can't deal with the load.

For these next shots I ran wprime 1024 at the max my phase could handle.

Not sure what I did on this one, but I'm 100% sure I benched this higher than the above 32m shot.

Most likely did not have the right core listed for the screenshot.

That wraps up phasechange results.

DI bench configuration
AMD phenom II 965BE C3 ( review sample )
Gigabyte 790 FXT-UD5P
Corsair dominator GT 1866 7-8-7
PC power & cooling 860 + 1200W
Custom LN2/DI pot courtesy of Aaron Schradin of www.ln2cooling.com
2x 4870x2 for 3d, some 2d with a 2600 pro

Kicking off the benchmarks with dry ice, you can see my results below.

OK time for some LN2.

LN2 bench configuration
AMD phenom II 965BE C3 ( review sample )
Gigabyte 790 FXT-UD5P
Corsair dominator GT 1866 7-8-7
PC power & cooling 860 + 1200W
Custom LN2/DI pot courtesy of Aaron Schradin of www.ln2cooling.com
2x 4870x2 for 3d, some 2d with a 2600 pro

I honestly did not have much time and ran into some hardware issues shortly after Msimax and myself benched, so these are fairly random and tossed together.

Namely I was working around previously crippled boards due to losing my last good cold board so please bear with me and the results.

For this I pushed cinebench a little further just for fun.

Played with some NB clocking, result isn't effecient but I just wanted to see how high the NB would boot.

Seems I messed up this shot too, pretty sure it was at 6.5g.

Msimax and myself pulled a couple results on his trip up here.

We were stuck with only 15L due to my Ln2 place dropping the ball, but we tried to make the most of it.

After we got a decent 3d result we tackled some PI on vista.

Here's the best 3d06 result we were able to get on limited LN2 and limited time.

To conclude, I'd say that it appears AMD has certainly made leaps and bounds since the release of the 955. I am definitely looking forward to what the future has in store for us from AMD.

Thanks! Greatly done review for those involved. Best presented and detailed OC review I've seen in a long time. Best of all is the methodology, well done

I've seen 4x 0933 other review samples by now. All were 1.375 CPU-VID and 1.10 NB-VID, except one, planet3dnow: 1.400 CPU-VID.

All of them were able to get the CPU 4.0GHz-4.1GHz stable on typical air cooling, 1.50-1.53v. NB especially clocked quite a bit higher and RAM a little higher too. So it does seem C3 offers better OC for the daily runner and the benchmarker.

I expect retail samples to get better by the day, so 4.0-4.3GHz stable should become common on air/water with guys with the relevant knowledge.

That part of AOD shows VID, not voltage. Voltage will be closer to what CPU-Z shows.

Lookin good! Great to see AMD pushin 4+Ghz on aircooling.

Just finished a 965BE gaming rig build for a friend. 3.7Ghz on the stock cooler was my overclock with it.

Not bad for the stock cooler Karm. Those things run hot!

4GHz+ stable on air-cooling with acceptable Vcore, 6.55GHz SuperPi 1M, 6.3GHz 2k6 benchable. Seems to me like AMD has a winner indeed Dave.

Great review chew , it's always a pleasure reading about you amd overclocking endeavors. But this one, is just... so encouraging. I wholeheartedly hope that AMD recovers, so that things improve for all of us, in terms of fair play between Intel and AMD.

Question I wonder...

Might this mean a chance of seeing a Phenom II X4 975 BE @ 3.6 GHz mayhaps?

Unofficially, I'd say without question, but I have no evidence to back that up, just my own opinion.

Oh, EnJOY. Take his unofficial word. It's coming, no question

I wonder what happened to C3 X2 555. I had thought it was releasing on the 4th.
