Want to make a secure portable browser

A friend of mine is going to the Philippines in a couple of weeks, and he wanted to make sure he could still do facebook and check his banking and so forth while he was there.

Most of the time he will be on his GFs computer but in case he was out and about and needed to hit a internet cafe I told him to bring a portable browser with him.

Now my thinking was Opera browser since it is more secure, and with ad blocking, and preloading his bookmarks and passwords so that he only needs to hit ctrl+enter or the wand button to log in. Not sure if this will help bypass keyloggers but I assume so.

The other option is Firefox, but honestly I almost never use that browser and am not familiar with it, I assume with the right extensions it can be as secure as Opera is natively, but would need help setting it up.

Since HTTPS sites will not natively stay logged in. I would like a button click type of login like Opera has as well.

Not going to some communist country so no need for proxy service like TOR I think.

    Anything I am missing?

I had one suggestion already over at OCF

"Firefox + AdBlock Plus (with EasyList and FanBoy subscriptions) + HTTPS Everywhere + LastPass + XMarks"

While that is a good suggestion, especially the encrypted saved passwords, I am looking for types of extensions that are necessary for a traveler. That is I am more interested in knowing what I should be doing to help him protect his information not just "download and run this." (Especially if he will be checking banking info in other countries!!)

Figured with the tech level of some of our members I might get more informed responses here

Ahh.. good suggestion i like that one too. TACO just blocks tracking cookies not ads.

Also (I had to google it) Fx is up to version 9??? Last one I ran was 3 lol

EDIT: going to have to lookup the differences between lastpass and ABINE as well if I go Fx

why not chrome? adblocker is available as well and has incognito browsing, is small footprint and fast, saves pword and syncs with the chrome anywhere else, native gmail access and now with rdp beta extension

Cuz no one I know likes chrome that I told about it LOL.

As for private browsing, Opera has had that forever, and IE has it to. Not sure about Firefox, but i would assume so, its been around for a long time.

Not worried about deleting private data from his browser, in fact I want it to save his stuff, but securely.

Looking like Fx with the extensions I mentioned above will probably be best might check Operas extensions out too see what they have. I know I can password protect Opera.

is this the Https everywhere you were talking about? https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

Also the last pass, I just worry about saving my important passwords online, even if they do encrypt them before they upload them. That does not worry you?

    I use it in Opera.

I guess that is what HTTPS everywhere is. that was a recommendation I got on OCF.

I will have to check the sites that actually have HTTPS capability to see if it even worth installing.

Lastpass I thought encrypted them locally with an option to remote. I will have to read up more on it. (which is why I started this thread with more than a week to get it figured out...)

it does encrypt them locally then uploads them. not sure if it is an option or not but I read this off their site ....

An encrypted backup copy of your data is stored in your account at Lastpass.com. Securely and seamlessly restore your passwords if you change computers.
EDIT ... Although upon further reading I found this ....

Securely backup your data to a USB key and use Firefox Portable or LastPass Pocket to use your data directly from the USB key.

Enter your password using your mouse on a virtual screen keyboard to protect yourself from keyloggers and keysniffers or use One Time Passwords.
Now this seems like a pretty sweet idea there ... virtual screen so no keyloggers can catch you. I like that!

    Sweet.

Now thats what I was thinking with Opera. Because saved passwords the key stroke would be ctrl+enter or just clicking the magic wand buton. But local passwords are not encrypted. AFAIK.

Okay looks like Firefox is going to be his browser

    Thanks Drew

I installed Firefox today, first time in like 5 years

It seems to have gotten a LOT better still not used to it yet as I have just been playing around with it between cleaning and getting the workspace sorted out (almost done, need to organize some of my roomates stuff as I still need just a little more room )

I have not organized stuff yet either but I figure I can clean out my tool box sort drawers and such while benching hardware

Not yet he is a simple guy and I did not want to overwhelm him. Going to go over it with him tomorrow and set it up.
